Finally, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 provides raw power with its 365 horsepower and still maintains that fuel-sipping 16/22/18 MPG city/hwy/combined1. When it comes to the Highlander, you only have one option, and it hardly matches the amazing abilities of the Explorer. The standard 2.7-liter 4-cylinder produces a meager 185 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. To get more, you’ll have to shell out more money for the 3.5-liter V6 engine and it caps out at 295 horsepower.

So far, it’s easy to see how the 2017 Explorer one ups the Highlander, but let’s take a look at the cabins of these SUVs. If you have a teen, you’ll love the MyKey® system for when they get their driver’s license. This nifty function gives you the ability to set limitations on speed – it not only alerts them when they’ve hit these restrictions, but the Explorer won’t exceed them. This extra blanket of safety begins from the moment they take a seat inside of the Explorer, too, chiming every six seconds until they buckle up. It also provides earlier warnings to fill up on fuel, as well as restricting stations labeled “explicit” on SiriusXM® Satellite Radio2. You won’t find any sort of comparable system on the Highlander, leaving your teen to their own devices. You’ll also find a number of extra amenities on the Explorer that really make every drive as easy as possible – like the rear view camera with washer. If the camera ever gets dirty, you have a simple way to clean the lens, even when you’re already moving. You won’t find that convenience on the Highlander!
